China's New-type Energy Storage Capacity up 61% by End-June

08-07-2026

A report from chinadaily.com.cn Jul. 31th, 2026:

China's installed new-type energy storage capacity increased 61 percent year-on-year to 153 million kilowatts by the end of June 2026, the National Energy Administration said Thursday.

New-type energy storage has become a key technology for facilitating the large-scale development and consumption of renewable energy, ensuring reliable electricity supply and improving the safety and stability of the power system, said Xu Jilin, an official with the administration, at a news conference.

A report released by the administration showed that during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25), China's installed new-type energy storage capacity increased from 3 million kilowatts to 136 million kilowatts, roughly doubling each year.

Lithium-ion battery storage remained dominant, but other technologies have also advanced rapidly, according to the report.

During the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-30), the administration will work to boost technological innovation capacity and raise industrial development levels in new-type energy storage, while promoting the sector's high-quality development through greater efforts and more practical measures, Xu said.
