Geely’s Green Methanol Fuels 19th Asian Games Ceremonial Torch

The 19th Asian Games, which has officially commenced in Hangzhou on September 23rd, marks an extraordinary milestone in sporting history when it becomes the pioneering global event to employ carbon neutral green methanol for the ignition and fuelling of the Games main torch. This innovative approach symbolizes a commitment to green and sustainable practices in sports, and it represents the inaugural use of methanol as a fuel source on a grand scale. The carbon neutral methanol for the historic Torch lighting will be provided by Geely Holding Group.

Leading the way in the transport of green carbon neutral methanol for the 19th Hangzhou Asian Games’ main torch tower is the Farizon G Heavy Truck, which operates on this sustainable e-fuel. Compared to traditional diesel-heavy trucks, it reduces carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 53% over its entire lifecycle, and when compared to LNG heavy trucks, it reduces emissions by 37%.

Geely’s Farizon Commercial Vehicles is the only domestic enterprise that covers heavy-duty trucks, light trucks and buses. The methanol-hydrogen power branch is a distinctive strategic technological path for the group and has achieved industrialized operation. Leveraging Geely’s 18 years of technical expertise in liquid hydrogen and methanol power, Geely Farizon has successfully developed the world’s first methanol heavy-duty truck and put it into mass production. The product technology is at the forefront on an international level.

On August 29th, TEDA Administrative Commission signed a project agreement with Geely Farizon New Energy Commercial Vehicles Group (hereinafter referred to as Farizon). Farizon will establish its methanol-hydrogen ecological headquarters in TEDA, engaging in activities such as research, sales, and operation of methanol vehicles, methanol trade and refueling, and green methanol production. After the project is put into operation, it will infuse new vitality into Tianjin’s automotive industry. It will comprehensively drive the development and gathering of upstream and downstream enterprises in the industry chain. This will also assist in the establishment of a large-scale methanol industry ecosystem in Tianjin and even the Northern China, contributing to the creation of a new clean energy industry system in line with the national “dual carbon” strategy.
